Bio
Born in Colombia, I spent my childhood between Cartagena de Indias, Mexico City, and Madrid. I now live in Barcelona, a city where I have flourished both personally and artistically.
As a textile artist, I seek to bridge the physical and cultural divide between Europe and Latin America, intertwining the worlds within me. My work is a woven narrative that allows me to connect with my roots, reinterpret my history, and discover my inner self.
I explore textures, colors, and meanings through unique pieces, blending techniques like high-warp weaving and tufting with materials such as jute, hemp, wool, cotton, and silk. Each piece is vibrant and intricate, incorporating gold to honor the pre-Columbian cultures of my homeland.
I work in the mediums of wall hangings, woven sculptures, and artistic installations, creating personal projects, collaborations, and private commissions.
"For me, weaving is a journey to the origins, the feminine, and the ancestral, a path to envision a future that honors the Earth and life, drawing us closer to our sacred and divine nature."
- Alexandra Navas
Themes of my work
My work highlights five main themes, reflecting a process of learning and exploration on topics that concern me, connect me to my roots, and offer a worldview from a feminine perspective.
-
Appreciating nature, understanding its impermanence, and realizing that we are a part of it, not separate, compels us to respect and protect it. As a mother, I believe that caring for our planet is the most valuable legacy we can leave for our daughters.
-
Weaving a tapestry in a world still dominated by patriarchy and capitalism is an act of defiance. Its slow, reflective rhythm evokes the natural pulses of life and links me to all the women who, since the dawn of history, have braided, sewn, and embroidered to bring civilization to life.
-
Their culture, their laws of origin, the preservation of ancestral wisdom and their deep connection to the land.
-
The impact of our actions on the environment and how it, in turn, shapes our cultural identity and way of life. The tensions and conflicts arising from colonization in a land where Indigenous, European, and African cultural legacies coexist.
-
The experience of displacement, the pain of departure and the search for identity in a context of uprooting.
